About 3,000 anti-fascists from Parma were reported in the files of the Fascist regime's police over nearly two decades (1922-1943) along with more than 700 people who emigrated for political reasons. Most of those who fled settled in France, mainly in the south-west where emigration from Emilia had always been quite relevant. France was the main target for the exiled from Parma, mainly anarchists, socialists and communists and, to a lesser extent, Catholics, giellisti (liberals) and Republicans. The Garonne, and later Paris, became the main areas of anti-fascist activities and gave shelter to many refugees. With the outbreak of civil war in Spain, fifty anti-fascists from Parma crossed the Pyrenees to enlist into the International Brigades and supported the Republican forces in their struggle against General Franco’s troops.Downloads
