Studies on moral sentimentality and the ethics of care play a crucial role, since the emotion aroused by the sight of a degraded natural habitat or the forced migration of a population can provoke a moral feeling that must be understood and analysed in order to act appropriately. The proposed analysis, based on my interpretation of Algirdas Julien Greimas’ semiotic square and the reasoning of Greimas, Jacques Fontanille and Eric Landowski, offers an opportunity to question the direction of human development and the construction of symbols and myths. The central issue lies in the search for a development model that integrates the demands of human progress with the conservation and development of the environment.
