The mural crowns in the civic heraldry of the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Kingdom of Italy

In Italian civic heraldry in most cases the ornament located above the escutcheon is the mural crown. This article has the target to give an overview on the origin of the mural crown and the following development in the Kingdom of Sardinia starting from 1849, then in the rest of Italy after the unification (1860) and the related institutionalization occurred in 1870 as consequence of the “Consulta araldica” (College of Arms) creation (1869).
