Exchange of books between the national libraries of Colombia and Uruguay in some documents from 1869 kept in the Archivo Histórico-Diplomático in Montevideo

Abstract

The essay reconstructs the history of when, in 1869, the exchange of literary and scientific publications between the national libraries of Uruguay and Colombia was initiated at the proposal of the Ministry of the Interior and Foreign Relations of the latter country. The two documents analysed for the reconstruction of this collaboration are kept in the Historical- Diplomatic Archive of Uruguay within the “Sub Fondo Resto Antiguo Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores”, in the “Sección Países”. The study of these sources is preceded by a concise description of the Archivo Histórico-Diplomatico of Uruguay, as well as of the storage locations of the volumes exchanged from 1869 onwards, namely the National Libraries of Colombia and Uruguay. The article closes by proposing the transcription of the note from the “Secretaría de lo Interior i Relaciones Esteriores” of November 1869 addressed to the Uruguayan Minister of Foreign Relations and the reproduction of the summary note on the letterhead of the “Ministerio de Relaciones Esteriores” of Uruguay of the missive received from the “Secretaría de lo Interior i Relaciones Esteriores” of Colombia on the mutual exchange of national publications.
