Islands, modernity and militarisation, a (little told) side-story
DOI:

The article deals with the military occupations in Sardinia created in the post-war period following the Italy-USA agreements. A brief introduction on the role of the islands in the post-war geostrategic design frames the theme of geographical positioning as a model based on hegemonies and dependence. In the examination of the militarisation of Sardinia, reference will be made to the two salient aspects highlighted by an examination of the local press: the building of consensus in the start-up and consolidation phase and the emergence of a critical view of the environmental risks generated by militarisation to the extent of questioning the original interpretation of militarisation as an opportunity for economic and social growth for an area otherwise doomed to poverty.
