The following article aims to evaluate the theoretical and political trajectory of the writer and militant Carlos Nelson Coutinho between 1977 and 1981, a period of significant changes in the thought of this communist author. Self-exiled in Europe from the threat of the military dictatorship, Carlos Nelson Coutinho spent almost two years between Italy and France, having the opportunity to study Gramsci and to approach with great passion to the political life within Enrico Berlinguer’s PCI. On his return to Brazil it was natural for him to identify with the fraction of the Brazilian Communist Party that saw in Gramsci and the PCI an example to follow for the renewal of the party. His theoretical elaborations and the group which he belonged to, however, did not find the political and ideological success he had hoped for.Downloads
