Since ancient times, tuna-fishing is an important activity for the Mediterranean economy.Over the years, fishing methods have been gradually perfected and Sicily has became the
main centre for the development of new techniquesbased on the tuna-fishing nets system.
Great tuna migrations, mostly since the beginning of the modern era, put sailors, fishermen,
experts, businessmen and capital into motion, relentlessly sailing through the waters of aur
sea and its coastline.A major role in this entire processi is played by Sardinia, a process that
some refuse to call “industrial” because of the production types concerned there in.
Therefore, it seems quite important to identify the emergence of the first tuna-fishing nets in
the Island along with their sudden development from an economic, social and cultural
perspective.
