Abstract

The early twentieth century in Argentina finds the artistic scenario largely reinforced by the links with Spain. These relationships prompted the renewal of languages and a new way of thinking local matters: Norah Borges, Octavio Pinto and Mariano Montesinos on Mallorca island, are examples of this situations. The case of Octavio Pinto allow us to discuss the imaginary configurations that, at this time, sought to give visibility to South American artists in the context of the island's journey. In this regard, we want to investigate how this journey served to rethink the Argentine landscape. At the same time it also provides insight into the travel experience as germinating process where aesthetic guidelines crystallize later in the territory of origin. Unlike other travelers artists who had initially migrated to the Mediterranean in search of an archaic aesthetic, to finally engage with the island society and experience firsthand the various economic and political crises; Octavio Pinto, according to the testimonies we have, lived outside the problem of a pre industrialized Mallorca seeking radical alternatives such as emigration to Latin America. However, his drawings and paintings on the island show Pintos' interest in the social aspect along with his artistic aesthetic.
