The island of Cuba occupied a very relevant place as a main destination for the emigration coming from the Balearic Islands. This migration affected all of the islands, altough with unequal intensity. Some municipalities that were specially affected by it were Andratx, Calvià, Ciutadela and Formentera. Cuban emigration intensified within the first decades of the XXth century. It was on those days when a very relevant Centro Balear (Balearic Centre) was founded in La Havana. Furthermore, two magazines were created in order to bring together the balearic community. Among the balearic emigrants there were many traders and shopkeepers (sometimes linked to shoe exportation from Mallorca and Menorca), sponge fishers, peasants, sailors and charcoal makers.Downloads
