During the 1930s, French nationals who settled in Uruguay came mostly from the poorest areas in France, in primis, from the Basque Country and the regions of Bigorre and Béarn. Through an original research of two records of French migrants held at the Registry of the French Consulate in Montevideo, it has been possible to get to know the names and surnames of almost 400 citizens of Oltralpe, who had moved to Uruguay in 1835 and in 1837-1838. This research has found that most of these migrants were artisans, tradesmen, shopkeepers and unqualified workers, mostly men. The essay includes a transcription of both records, which refer the following data: “Record Number”, “Names”, “Surnames”, “Occupation/s” and “Remarks”.
