Through archival sources, this article tracks the anti-fascist activities of Cornelius Martis, born in the mining town of Guspini, Sardinia. A militant in the movement Justice and Freedom, he expatriated first to Tunisia and eventually to France. In 1931 he returned to Italy where he was warned by the fascist regime. He expatriated again in 1937 as a clandestine to Tunisia, settling himself in Tunis where he obtained a passport as a political refugee by the local French authorities. In contact with anti-fascists and Justice and Freedom, he took part into the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), fighting in the 12th Garibaldi Brigade. During the retreat of Caspe, near the city of Zaragoza in March 1938, he was charged with treason and executed by a Communist Party political commissar.Downloads
