This essay is divided into three parts: the first gives synthetic information about "Is Arenas", a penitentiary located in the town of Arbus; the assistance provided in 2011 by the health services is described, giving an insight on the health needs in the difficult and complex world of detention. The second part deals with the health conditions of the inmates on the basis of a study of 230 medical records referring to them be tween January 1 and April 30, 2012. The third part describes the health needs observed by the Department of Mental Health and Addictions of the Local Health Unit (ASL) n. 6 Sanluri, through two surveys carried out on June 30 and December 31, 2011.
