The geographic area of Middle Campidano, formerly belonging to the Province of Cagliari, became autonomous in 2005. Including 28 municipalities with a population of just over 100,000 inhabitants, this area has recorded a remarkable population decline over the past few years; such a change is due both to an increasingly negative natural balance and a staggering migration rate. Middle Campidano appears today as an area with ageing population, while young people tend to emigrate because of the weak economical development and scarce employment.
