This essay offers a historical study of the life of Francesca Antonia Scanagatta, first lieutenant in the army of the Holy Roman Empire from 1799 to June 1801. After a brief historical introduction, the paper reconstructs Scanagatta's biography through the sources coeval to her life. It then examines the heraldic issues relating to the Scanagatta coat of arms as handed down by the sources. The essay aims to fit into the panorama of the history of women and to highlight the role of Scanagatta at the dawn of the 19th century.
